And after all of this is done, who would you rather be? Either way, I hope it's still with me. You were so close to something that I left unknown, but it was a chance I took, and now you're here with me. Argo had hummed the notes to her children, the message it betrayed audible only amongst the wolves. It was a language well gaurded, a dialect foriegn even to dogs. But now the Alphess did not sing it to her pups, for she was concerned with how the pack would accept them. A month she'd been in hiding, the white wolf that had cared for her long gone, and now the pups were old enough to meet the rest of the brethren.
Their world to play in would now be extended from the mouth of the den to rocky spanse which ended with a sheer drop off. Such places would not be one for human children, which were dense and ignorant at a month old, but wolf pups knew better; when the ground ended, you would fall and die. Argo trusted them all well enough not to journey any further than the end of the little plateu of the Eiran dens. In time they would learn the pathway down, but that was to come months later. For now the Alphess was concerned with the affairs of her pack. She knew they needed her approval of several matters, and she also needed to make her council aware of her meeting with Glyn. For now the pups would be able to play under her watchful eye, and so the white wolfess offered a small yip to encourage them all forward.
Then she herself padded gracefully onto the smooth bedrock which offered those who relaxed outside the dens a place to sun themselves. But she waisted no time in raising her head, a long howl echoing fourth, calling all of the pack to the dens to greet the month old pups, familliarize their scents, and finally discuss buisness while the whelps explored the opening of the dens. She sung for a few brief seconds before cutting off the ending note, and then... waiting.
Xane had awoken to her mother stirring, and with a yawn, she opened her eyes and stretched out. The ebony pelt made her stick out from her three brothers, who boasted the beautiful, shimmering white pelts of their mother; her sister suffered the same problem; it was a beautiful bonding feature they shared. But as she stretched, she looked up into her mother's golden eyes, at which point she called to the litter. Without needing a second invitation, she bounded over her dozing siblings, not caring who she tripped over--they needed to get up anyways. For her first time, she stepped into the light of the outside world, freezing for a moment to enjoy the warming sensation it had on her black pelt.
She blinked a couple times, clearing the rays of sunlight from her brilliant blue eyes, before she looked to Argo who stood, howling. The sound was harmonious, and it ended all too soon in her opinion; it was a calling song, and calling what she wondered. She'd never seen another wolf before, only the fuzzy lumps which were her siblings... and, speaking of siblings, Xane turned tail, before running back into the den and pouncing into the pile of pups, small tail wagging in excitement as she barked at them. "GET UP! GET UP! GET UP!"
And without missing another beat, she turn and ran back out into the light, thrilled with her new boundries, before sitting on her haunches, looking at everything, enjoying the tumaults of new scents and sounds. But most of all she loved the sun, and lowered herself, lying out beneath it. The cool mountain air mixed with that warming bath was the most wonderful feeling she'd experienced thus far, and Xane couldn't help but close her eyes and bask in this new world.

Braith's nose lifted upwards from his spot with Castas and Aijan. They had been resting from the ordeal for a while, the huge Beta looking out for his pack brothers while they had slept. Softly, he nudged them awake, but as they stirred, he began to walk away, knowing the boys would soon follow his trail up to where he heard the musical notes of his Alphess.
Of course there was business to attend to, lots of messy business here in Eira, and some of it a bit awkward. Braith had been contemplating the fates of his two valliant pack mates. Of course, he would recommend Castas for some kind of promotion, he mused, as his great paws picked up a slow, almost laboured trot, keeping at his own pace in order to save his lungs... But then, what for Aijan? There was only a few openings, and they all included the mates of the already deemed members - so unless either he or Aijan stepped down... No, no, Braith would not ask for that, maybe Castas could lead the hunters, or the more warrior like wolves in the land... keep his position like, but be a little more respected?
All this thinking made the great male's brain wobble, so he slowed back to a walk again, now spying the high tops of the dens within his view. It would be another ten minutes before he made it, he calculated, watching everything get closer as his heart rate pulsed forwards and his lungs fluttered roughly. Blinking back the sudden exhaustion, he drove forwards, looking round occasionally for his brethren, then back up to his destination.
It seemingly took forever to climb the way up to the pack dens, the lushious white pelt of Argo highly visible against the earthy caves. Bowing his head slightly as he neared the top, the male addressed his Alphess with a humble, Lady Argo.
Then his gaze shifted to the smell of fresh puppies, that sweet, musty smell that came with their fur in small compressed bounds. One's excitement spread through the ground and through his fingertips, and his great bishy tail began to sweep side to side in a gentle wag. Asking permission with his gaze before doing so, he lowered himself to the floor, so that he was the same height as the children. This way - he remembered from his pack before, he would not be as big or intimidating to them then.
He smiled at the white Alphess, crimson flecked orbs reching the area just aside to her own. They are beautiful, Argo. I bet you're proud as hell of them. Came the subtly rough voice from his larynx. He spoke to her from the floor, hoping that the pups would come and investigate. He hoped Argo would not mind - but if she did, well... she did did she not? What events occurred overseas, m'lady? Or on the other side of the border so to speak. There's a decision made, I take it? He enquired, keeping his eyes on her though he was on the ground. It looked sort of humiliating really, but Braith only wanted the pups to be comfortable.

Castas||
and the bell tolls for no one i don't wanna get up right now
The younger male came awake with difficulty, his body protesting by telling him just how nice lying down really was; the trek back to the dens had been brutal on his already abused body, especially with finding a way of getting across the river without risking his neck further. Not that he regretted it, no, nor his choice to aid Aijan in the first place; that was what pack members were for, after all. However, that didn't mean his body particularly enjoyed being used as a rag doll, and it was now telling him just how much trouble he was in for being just a bit reckless.
With a groan and an accompanying wince, Castas heaved himself up off the ground, glancing at Aijan as he did so. Braith had already wandered off, presumably following Argo's echoing call up to the den where she'd been hidden since (apparently) long before the three of them had even arrived. Castas ignored the petulant aches located all over his body as he padded forward, edging around Aijan although he was sure the mottled wolf was probably already well on his way to waking as well. Following Braith up to the dens, the younger male enjoyed the feeling of the sun filtering through his fur; springtime was definitely in the air, sending an exhilarating thrill through his blood which eased some of the more irritating and plaintive pains. He stopped as he crested the top of the plateau, eyes lighting first on the luxurious pelt of his Alphess before spinning to Braith, spread ridiculously on the ground before...
Castas felt his milky green eyes widen; he couldn't remember seeing wolves this small... at least, not in comparison to himself. When he'd been that age, his siblings hadn't seemed so small to him, but here... An excited whine erupted from his nose and mouth before he could stop it, and his ears came forward as his tail lifted a little bit. He stepped lightly around to the other side of Braith, glancing at both of his superiors with a nervous sort of anxiousness.
"Can I...?" Eyeing the larger bulk of Braith, Castas followed the Beta's lead and lowered himself first onto his haunches, then down onto his belly, ears falling gently to the sides of his skull as he looked longingly at the little furry lumps, one of whom, sporting a black pelt, had already stepped out into the sunlight. He laid his head down on his paws and heaved a sigh, glancing up at the snowy-pelted Alphess with the ear nearest to her flicked up, as if to indicate the sheer gravity of the confusion he felt; the words 'whatdoIdo?!?' were circling his head in an excited cacophony, and his remaining aches from the battle by the river were quite forgotten, for the time being.

Solon was snuggled among his siblings but also close to his mother. When she rose, he felt the chill on his side as that warmth left him, and he whined slightly in discomfort but was still pulled in sleep. He curled then deeper into himself to try and make up for that barrier he had lost.
But the continuity in his slumber would not continue for long. He lost yet another barrier as Xane awakened and rose to follow their mother, flicking his ear with her leg as she brushed past him. Another small whine and another attempt to curl towards warmth, but he was already as bunched as could be. Slowly he was being pulled out of his gentle slumber and into waking, but he fought to stay asleep. He was still too tired to greet the morning.
Finally, Xane came into that battle and helped the rousing elements win as she made her call to the pups. "GET UP! GET UP! GET UP!" Solon groaned as he opened a deep amber orb that caught her backside as she exited the den. He truly loved his sister, felt her to be perhaps one of his closer siblings, but right at that moment he was not exactly appreciating her or what she had just done. Lifting his heading, he viewed the world now only through a half-moon gaze as his eyelids still hung with exhaustion. Tongue curled out of his mouth as it expanded wide in a yawn, follow by a shake of his head as he attempted to shake himself awake.
Mother had spoken of this day, when they would venture into a whole new world filled with the likes that up until then they could only picture in dreams. Solon had dreamed of that new world, oh yes he had. It didn't seem like it at the moment but he was filled with enthusiasm and anticipation for that new world. Now that he was fully conscious, those two emotions began to pump through his little veins, and his eyes were aglow as they looked towards the mouth of the den that was being flooded with golden light.
Well what was he waiting for? With a short glimpse at his siblings to see if they too were finally stirring, he rose to his paws and ventured forth into the unknown.
And what he saw was absolutely breathtaking. The warmth he had lost from his sister and mother's departure he gained all back as the sun enveloped him in its rays, making the ginger tips of his white-cream fur seemed to glow, giving his coat an overall shine. It was really an entrance fit for a young prince, but his royalty was the least of his concerns right now as he took in his surrounds with a slight gap of his mouth in awe. This was his home, and at that moment he couldn't have been happier or prouder to call it that.
The majesty of it was quite overwhelming, weighing down on his mind that it was making him a bit dizzy. And the sun, oh, he just couldn't get over the feel of it. He loved snuggling into his mother's belly and feel the warmth of her fur against his, but if he couldn't have that, he would surely have this. Seeing Xane not far from where he stood, he walked over to her, a new bounce in his step. A smile set upon his muzzle, he lowered himself next to her, speaking in soft tones so as not to possibly disturb the beauty of what surrounded him. "Isn't this great?"
They were not alone for long--though they had not been to begin with, for of course their mother was standing by keeping a vigilant watch. These two new wolves were just as big as her, if not bigger, and could perhaps frighten any pup. But to Solon, they were enthralling. He immediately raised his head to the both of them, following them as they both lowered to his and Xane's level, which was much more comfortable. His little tail began to brush--no, sweep the ground beneath him with its tip as the excitement of their appearance came over him. He gave them a grin that was so charming, its sweetness magnified by his puppy exterior. "Hello!"

Todd tried to close his eyes just for a few more minutes. Sleep did not come easy because of a nightmare he had the night before where he got lost in the cold, outside world. Todd resisted kicking Solon; he didn't want to get in a quarrel while he was napping.
As soon as he came back into consciousness, Todd broke down and opened his eyes. Todd had been dreaming of this day for all of his life, and now that it was here, Todd was a little disappointed. It was just another day inside the cozy den. Then, an overwhelming urge came over him to turn around and gaze into the light.
He climbed out of the den stiff-legged and was blinded by a type of light he had never seen before. Then, everything came into focus. There were other wolves by his mother; a few of which smelled like he did and wondered who they could be. He let out an excited, "Hello!" and tried to hide behind his mother's foreleg.
((I'm so sorry, guys. I wanted to post in this so bad. But I left the day before this thread opened, so go figure. I know it's late, but hey. At least I posted.))

The corners of Braith's mouth twitched in a flicker of a smile. Whiskers flickered tentatively as three of the pups came out to investigate the light. The large Beta could not help but grin as one hid behind his mother's leg. One ear swivelled beside him to take note of Castas, now beside him, thankfully just as stupid and degrading as the Beta, both flat on the floor to accompany the little scraps of fur.
The level of embarassment the male originally felt decreased a little, though still in the precense of Argo, it made sure he did not forget about it. Braith's cheeks flushed under his fur as he gave a complimentary smile to his pack-brother. Don't worry Castas, just let them come to you, is all. He advised, giving the other a wink as he did so.
His red gold eyes switched from the adult sized body of Castas to the considerably smaller month old pups, two of which stated a hello. He turned first to the ivory coloured male behind Argo's leg, gave him an encouraging wink, and replied to both. Hey there... Who do I owe the great pleasure? That is to say, what are your names then? He grinned at them with his chin on the floor, his one ear flipping forward and the tuft of fur on the other side of his head trying to defy the lack of cartilige there. Braith did look back at Argo, however, to see whether she would start speaking.
Turning his attention away from the pups, he decided he should tell her the happenings of while she had been away. Clearing his throat, he began rather statically. Lady Argo, something happened when you were gone, involving Aijan and Castas. He stopped, realising that was not the way the message would be taken. No, no, I mean, Aijan had become victim to a rougue wolf's maddened ways. Castas stepped in to protect his pack brother, and on my search for Castas, I found them and intervened too. The beast gave no name, but was a dark colouring with half a white face and a red rock for an eye. Apparantly Glyn has had some bother with him too. I've issued the command for him to be killed if he is ever seen in Eira again. Is this ok?

"Isn't this great?"
Great seemed an understatement. With each breath of the chilled air, she knew this enviornment was paradise; there could be no other comparison to the beauty which was her kingdom. Xane opened her blue eyes once more, following her brother's movements as she watched the two bigger wolves lying on their stomach. Already they introduced themselves, and the young princess couldn't help but interact with them. She stood, walking towards Todd and her mother and stopping just short of them. The ebony pup looked the two in the eye, smiling at the two bigger wolves.
"I'm Xane." She said it as regally as she could muster, trying to match the noble air her mother gave off. But she'd come short, and her statement now sounded like a jaded fragment, so the whelp made up for it by unexpectedly tackling Todd. "And this is my brother, Todd. He's too shy to introduce himself." With her sharp pup teeth she nipped at her brother's ear, before she felt the great paw of her mother swat her firmly, but still gently, away.
Xane looked up, smiling into the golden eyes of the white alphess, before shifting gears quickly yet again, and bounding towards Castas. She stopped, sliding across the smooth stone and into a pouncing position, a smirk on her tiny maw as she let out a low growl, before leaping at Castas face, clambering up over his maw to find her place atop his head, gnawing at his ear as well. She stopped, smiling, leaning over his head again to peer down into his eyes.
"What's your name?"
Argo nodded to Braith, replying coolly, "Yes, we reached an agreement. We're attacking the hunting parties starting during the coming winter. We hope to inspire fear in the humans, so that they shall cease to expand and, with hope, leave all together."
Soon after her answer, however, she was smiling, watching the two males bond with the pups. Solon, like the future king she hope he'd become, was warmly introducing himself. But just as he was begining to show his courage, she felt the presence of Todd, to which she looked down upon, extending her words of encouragement to him. "Go on, introduce yourself." But as if on cue, Xane instantly tackled him and took that power away; but like a good mother, she swatted the girl away to allow her son more breathing room. She looked down at her daughter with an inquisitive grin, before watching her bound off; to be a mother again... nothing could make the emotions she currently felt smoulder so intensely inside her heart.
But just as soon Briath inquired once more, to which she nodded. "Yes it is alright. You are the Beta, my friend. You have no overstepped your rank at all, so rest easy friend; my permission was not needed for such an obviously needed command. It troubles me I was not able to be there to help protect my packmates, but it brings me peace of mind no one was killed and all were able to expel the intruder. But speaking of him, where is Aijan?"

Solon cocked his head at his sister, watching her movements with curiosity. She was so trying to be like their mother that he almost made him laugh aloud, but he didn't want to bring that kind of attention to himself or embarrass her if it came to it. Still, it was very amusing.
As for he, he didn't feel the need to try and make himself more than he was. There was no real authority that he could right now impose upon these kind gentlemen, and they only had to look at his mother to know of his regalia. The young prince didn't need to shove it upon them. Besides, they seemed interested in him enough without him having to do barely anything. And that was all he needed right now.
But he frowned when he saw Todd. Solon knew his brother wasn't exactly the boldest of the bunch, but he didn't want his younger brother to miss out on what he and Xane were experiencing right now. He looked first at Braith, who was the wolf closest to him, before getting up and moving towards Todd. He had already been tackled by Xane at this point, and that wasn't the strategy he wished to use; if anything, Xane's strategy would only deter him away. Solon tried a gentler approach, playfully tugging on Todd's ear before then nudging him under his chin to try to physically perk him up. "Come on. You can stick by me, if you want." He smiled encouragingly. He would willingly look after his brother until he found his feet if it meant he wouldn't be an introvert this whole time.
The prince then turned back to where he had been a second before, right in front of Braith. Something about the male drew Solon to him, and he heard his mother refer to him as the Beta in the conversation, which only increased this pull. The ginger-brushed ivory male then stood tall before this Beta character, holding his head high to look at him. "I'm Solon. What is your name?"

Castas ||
breathing in patterns like twisting clockwork dangling threads on a broken string
He chuckled at the antics of the darkest pup; clearly the most gregarious (and probably correspondingly rambunctious) of the present group, she reminded him of his own siblings long ago. The expected wave of nostalgia didn't come, however, and as he paused he wondered if it was due to the fact that he was moving on. Life had turned around him, twisting along the clockwork edges of understood time; with the seasons changing around him, he found the sharpest edges of his memories dulled, fading more quickly by the day.
The three pups present brought a smile to his face, but he listened to his Beta's suggestion; he didn't want to scare the little creatures, especially the one who had excitedly yipped and then promptly taken cover behind Argo's leg. He winced sympathetically as the small male was tackled by his energetic sister; the wince quickly turned to a real one as she landed on the spot Exodus had kicked within a matter of moments. He flicked his ear as she started gnawing on it, more of a reaction than anything else, but he was careful not to dislodge the warm little ball of dark fur as he looked up at her.
"My name is Castas. Xane, right?"
He already knew her name was Xane, of course; the timid one was Todd, as Xane had excitedly announced, and apparently the regal young male was Solon. Cas couldn't really help but eavesdrop; chew toys his ears might currently be, but they still functioned at full capacity. He had listened to Braith's rendition of events and held his tongue; he had nothing useful to add, after all, and didn't particularly feel like volunteering his questionable performance in the matter. Not that he'd hesitate to give it if asked; Argo wasn't one to be trifled with, as anyone could see. Cas still remembered the day he had first come across the Alphess... the day the whole pack had been embroiled in a fight. The day a member of the pack had died, a member he would never know.
He wondered where Aijan had gotten to; didn't he want to meet the new pups? They were, after all, pack responsibility; Cas got the feeling he would be spending quite a bit of time having his ears, tail, and paws abused, most particularly by the current little terror perched atop his head.
He found he really didn't mind. If anything, Castas felt his heart lighten a little. Koru would like it, his mind admitted, and left it there. It was time to move on-- to let the past die the death it had been waiting for, and let the promise of the present and future work its way into his soul.

A grin crept along Braith's jawline as he watched the pups push and shove and help and dodge. He clocked Xane as she introduced her brother, claiming him too shy to say anything. A mocking impression of a cynical stare was aimed that-a-way, followed by a grin. His head turned up to face Argo again, smiling back at her with a more reserved contemplation on his facial features. Her voice and stature changed dramatically between business and pleasure. The bulky male nodded rhythmatically as she spoke, taking all of her information; served with ice as it was. So, now we wait... Came the musical murmur from within his throat.
So. They would be attacking the humans? Seems reasonable enough... Yet, killing? No, no... he must do what is best for his pack, when the time comes at least. He would go to Glyn in the time being, to find out about this renegade, so that they knew what they were up against. Who knows, this one wolf could make the human situation a whole lot worse - the scents on him were muddled and vague. Faintly, he smelt the smell that drifted down from the human territory, a sandy, Auryn smell, and clogging waves of blood and madness, all that on one wolf's pelt, who knew what he was capable of?
The tuft of fur where once an ear was twitched slightly, and a grimace pulled across his face as Aijan's name slid into conversation. Braith's gaze turned to Castas before he answered, his sole ear lowering a little. As far as I know, he's either still by the lake, or on his way up. He got a little, uh... shook up by events with this renegade; as though it was his fault for everything that happened. I am sure he is on his way, I mean, Aijan wouldn't miss this! The large brute twisted the grimace into a smile before being pulled away by the regal voice of one of the pups. He glanced up apologetically at Argo, before turning his muzzle to Solon, and giving him a warm grin in return.
'Lo Solon. I'm Braith. came the musical bass sound of his voice. His eyes slid over to Castas, who was bombarded by a furry, black canonball at that moment. He smiled, then looked back at Solon. Looks like your sister's had too much sugar. The Beta murmured, winking at him. He looked at Todd too, giving him a much reassuring and gentle grin behind his teeth. Dont worry lad, I dont bite.

Blue eyes shined behind a subtle mixture of nervousness and excitement, and the effect was one of liquid beauty that rested too readily in a wolf of Aijan's build. His curiosity was marked by quickening anxiety as his newly increased pack romped forward; taking a deep breath and ignoring the way it caught sharply in his chest, he watched as the pups left the comfort of their den to introduce themselves. Three boys and two girls, all of them perfect, he thought. Just like their mother.
The thought made him duck his lightly spotted head with soft embarrassment. The ends of his ears were black points that twitched back and forth as he hungrily sought sound after sound; Argo's cool voice, like so many layers of snow; Braith's brassy tones of reassurance; Castas, whose words were lighthearted amidst the nipping wave of young life; and then the sounds of those little lives, the bold and shy, the laughter and the softly spoken names. Aijan felt all at once fiercely proud in a way he couldn't explain.
Slowly, as though a pup himself, he padded toward the group.
