My name is Aruto.
I was named for the low-toned song
created by my vocal cords
when I dare to sing.
I was named by my father, Inferno
and my mother, Reiko.
Alphas of the Brillé Pack.
Five others share my parents,
them I call my siblings.
Three sisters, each unique.
Glaciér, Berrii, and Ikumi.
Two brothers, so alike.
Ryuu and Talon.
Rivals are unknown to me
As are enemies.
I have few friends besides my family.
I'm alone in this strange, new land.
I often give a second chance
and often even a third.
My heart remains untied
as I have no one to love
As are enemies.
I have few friends besides my family.
I'm alone in this strange, new land.
I often give a second chance
and often even a third.
My heart remains untied
as I have no one to love
I like to think thirty-one inches at the shoulder is average
as is five feet, seven inches nose to tail.
I am not a typical gray wolf
for I am a small part husky.
My fur is light gray-silver
my back and sides are gray with some black.
The top of my tail and the back of my head match
in gray.
The backs of my ears are black
matching my back right paw.
My eyes were husky blue as a pup
but are green now.
The Brillé Pack made its home in a harsh, snowy territory in northern Canada. My father was born in this pack, to the alphas, though he was born in a lush, green forest, which had been home to the pack for many years before he was even born. He had two sisters and a brother, though the youngest female died only days after being born. A half-sister and half-brother of his also lived in this pack, pups of his father and the beta female.
Two years later, he had only a half-sister and his parents as family, though everything was going well. He'd heard rumors of his parents having another litter of pups, in case all did not go well with him. It made him feel unwanted, and as if they didn't believe he could survive, or lead a pack on his own. From then on, he did the best he could at everything. He never let anyone win against him, and was constantly practicing his fighting moves.
At three years old, my father became the alpha. Two-legs had invaded their territory, and had begun to cut down the trees. If that wasn't enough, many of them had built homes nearby. My grandparents sent their strongest warriors, which the exceptions of the betas and head warrior, to warn the two-legs, resulting in severe injuries on each wolf. The pack had no choice but to leave the forest, so they did. They went north, into the mountains. Most of the wolves in the pack weren't used to harsh weather and snow, which caused many wolves to die, including my grandmother. After two months of traveling, my grandfather died, leaving my father to be alpha. He led the pack through the mountains, finding a wide, snowy field to make their new home in.
Another year later, he fell in love with a new wolf they had accepted into the pack, who had fled her old pack. He made that wolf his mate and the pack's alphess. My father was still strong, and my mother, too. She had a wide knowledge of plants and herbs, and often helped teach the deltas, who, in that pack, were in charge of caring for wounds and injuries.
A few months later, I was born. It was a perfectly balanced litter. Three females and three males. Our parents didn't name us until we were three months old, which surprised the other wolves. It was something my mother was used to, though, because it was something her old pack used to do.
I was two years old when my father died. He had eaten some berries, thinking them to be raspberries, but they were actually poisonous. He died only hours later, leaving my mother to lead the pack. She had been leading the pack on her own for only a few weeks when she died. She had fallen sick, and had spread the illness before she died. It seemed almost every wolf in the pack became sick, even my brother, Ryuu, who became alpha when my mother died. Only two of my sisters, another young female, and myself remained healthy. The four of us hunted a lot, and did what we could to help the other wolves. A week later, only my brother, Talon, my sisters, a huntress, a warrior, another young female, and myself had survived. Talon, as the alpha, decided we should stay where we were, until we were fit to travel.
A few days later, a new pack found us and attacked. The huntress was the first to be killed, as she had been the weakest. The rest of us fought, but, being so weak, we couldn't do much to defend ourselves.
----
"Run." A frail voice whispered.
Aruto looked over in the direction the sound had come from to see his brother, the alpha, pinned against the ground. Another wolf had his large paws pressing on the shoulders of the weakened male, but was not yet moving in to kill the other wolf.
"Aruto. Alieu. You must run." The wolf's voice came in a whisper, sounding fragile enough to break should a gust of wind blow by. The breath that came from his jaws was barely enough to make a wisp of cold air appear as a tiny cloud in the air.
Aruto nodded, unable to speak. He couldn't even turn his head to look at the silver-furred wolfess that stood beside him, for he was that even Alieu could not comfort him now. For some reason, Aruto could not tear his green eyes away from his brother just yet. The gray-and-black-furred wolf was basically helpless, unable to move his paws or legs. It was clear that he didn't have enough energy to clamp his jaws, sending his sharp fangs into his attacker's muscled foreleg. He was unable to fight back, and yet...he looked so strong.
"Run. Now." It seemed the great alpha's voice had grown even weaker as his chest heaved.
Aruto nodded again, this time turning away as he did so. He was unable to speak, afraid that his voice would be choked, and the sound would reveal the great sadness that gripped his heart. He couldn't show that he was weak. Not yet. He and Alieu had to make it out of the pack's territory first, or else his weakness would become apparent to the relentless attackers.
Blood stained the otherwise glistening white snow, a sight that was almost unbearable to the gray-furred male. He was beginning to think this was the most horrible thing he'd seen when he heard his brother let out a howl of pain. Then he was sure that, had he turned to look back, that would have been the worst thing he'd seen.
His paws thundered against the snow-covered ground, the frozen water muffling the 'thud' they made as they did so. Tears filled his green eyes, threatening to spill as Aruto ran. He couldn't let them, though. They were out of the territory, yes, but he didn't want Alieu to see him weak. Fortunately, just as a lone tear trickled down his cheek, Alieu spoke.
"We should go in different directions. As much as I trust you, Aruto, I think it would be a good idea. I'm sorry." Her voice was soft and gentle, but held wistful tone. Aruto could only nod his agreement, however much it broke his heart to do so. It seemed, as he shifted his gaze to his paws, that the sadness gripping his heart had intensified. If Alieu really did leave, he would be all alone. "Goodbye, Aruto." Alieu's voice was barely a whisper, but it was confident. "Goodbye, Alieu." With only two words for the silver-furred female, Aruto turned away and began to walk. He was now truly alone.
