I wish the picture was a bit more aged… But this will do.
Lane Coston
Lane Coston
Character
full name: Lane Coston[/blockquote]
gender: Male
age: Forty - nine
birthdate: October 15
occupation: Transportation Overseer
appearance: Of a grizzled and rough sort, Lane is usually seen with his strong jaw unshaved and his graying hair for the most part unkempt. While he may appear wild – his wrinkled and awkwardly-fitting clothes only adding to the unruly effect – such an appearance is due more to a habit of forgetting to check a mirror rather than any boorish indifference on his part. Age has brought Lane strong features, with a tight mouth and angular cheekbones that set off the deep blue of his eyes. Although he has been slow to gray, his years are evident in the lines that characterize his face.
Lane is a practical person and as such wears only practical clothes; he is normally clothed in good, stout wool and thick leather boots for winter, of which he complains about often due to the way the cold stiffens his right leg. An iron overturn that took place only recently before the construction of the railroad left him a scar and a limp that will hound him to the grave.
While not muscled, certainly not like a younger man, Lane’s lean, knotted body is full of stamina. Even with a staggering walk, he carries himself well, his shoulders naturally set back and the tilt of his head pronouncing good posture. His hands are calloused after years of working with a steel manufacturing company, as well as time spent outside hunting and maintaining a working area.
face claim: Will Bercik
eyes: Blue
hair: Salt – and – pepper - brown
height: 5’11
weight: 183 lbs
sexuality: Straight
personality: If ear boxing were a sport, he’d take first.
Short tempered and stubborn, the fact that Lane is intelligently pragmatic only makes his abrasive mentality harder to swallow. He is quick to judge and even quicker to teach a lesson, though he is never purposely cruel. He will never expect from a man what he himself cannot accomplish, and is therefore likeable from afar. A strict, infallible sense of justice and a sharp eye for mistakes make Lane a hard overseer and an authoritative figure in town. The man makes it his job to know everyone and everything, and whilst he is certainly not the nosy sort, you can trust that he knows what is happening around him.
Honesty and a severe worth ethic make up his daily characteristics, along with an occasional drink to warm the blood – a habit he keeps strictly away from work. He is never late, nor does he accept mishaps in routine. As though his limp were a fault that discipline could fix, he pushes himself to his limits, always working himself just short of too far; it is well known that his temper is at its worst toward the evening.
For the most part, his tongue lashings are reserved for the men and boys who work around him, and usually justified if not well given. Lane is gruffly respectable towards women, and although he’d be the last to admit it, he likes to see children romping around outside. Though, if he catches one underfoot, he’ll deliver an especially loud round of curses and threats to send them running.
Straightforward manners are lost on him.
history: Lane grew up in southwestern England as a roughly loved bastard; his mother, a single woman made severe by time, raised him alone as best as she could; there wasn’t always enough to eat, and their living conditions weren’t the best, but she cared for him as she thought best and was rare to give open affection to a boy that needed to be dependable to live.
At the age of seventeen, Lane’s mother developed the cough that would kill her. When he was on his own, toughened by the stark life he had been given, decided to leave the town he had never felt truly at home in and set off further west. Already boasting a callous independence, he worked for his food and board and quickly learned of the surrounding land he traveled through.
After managing to reach a prominently growing city, much larger than the Casterbridge rate, he settled for a while and found a job in the metal industry. Quick thinking and a reliable work ethic provided him with better work, and after a few years he came to supervise shipments adopt larger responsibilities, gaining himself a respectable title. He lost most of his accent in the neutral working environment.
When he met Tracy Cook, Lane had saved enough money to give them a nice wedding and a small but pleasant home. Although they tried to have a child together, Tracy never managed to conceive. Life went by, and they enjoyed each other’s company with a loving calm and understanding that is usually associated with older couples. Lane continued to progress at his job, rising higher and higher in status. When Tracy announced that she was pregnant four years after their marriage, both of them were thrilled. However, there were complications, and both Tracy and the babe did not survive childbirth.
That was when Lane found a liking in the bottle. Even so, his personality did not allow him to mourn long – at least, not outwardly – and he returned to work shortly afterward somewhat more bitter of a man.
His career got him involved with the railroad in the wolfish lands, during the construction of which he oversaw production and communication systems. Now, with the railroad complete, he has been posted as the town’s transportation supervisor, putting him responsible for the newly developed steel works as winter spills its chilly fingers over the land.
