personality, » Mace is adventurous, spontaneous, and often times fueled by his own emotions rather than sensibility. He is quick to take action, without much thought on the ordeal before diving in head first. His ultimate fear is returning back to Townsville, Australia empty handed and heading back to the mundane work at the steel mill. Fending for himself out in the wilderness is proving to be a much better life than Townsville could ever have to offer. Self-sufficient ( at least he thinks so ) and able ( forced ) to rely on himself, Mace has become accustomed to the solitary life, embracing it as best as he could. Often times he is heavily eccentric in his thoughts, which leak out into his actions because no one is around to tell him otherwise. He is very stubborn, and is not used to, nor known for, listening to others’ advice.
As far as morals and values go, however, Mace is tried and true. If ever allowed past his one-man-army exterior, one would find a fiercely loyal and honest man who is not as confident as he makes himself seem to be. A man who direly misses his mother and worries often about his father, he could be a true family man if any were to ever trick him into commitment.
Mace rarely thinks before he speaks, and even on rarer occasion sugar coats his words. Never one to be too personable, he would much rather trek through the wilderness than be in the midst of any social gathering. Unknown to him, this journey to find “new land” is actually a personal journey to find himself – Mace is just a hands-on type of man, who has to physically go through the trials and tribulations in order to learn anything, rather than learn about himself through mild personal experiences around his left behind home life.
history, » Townsville, Queensland, Australia, circa April, 1911. The sky was a gloomy grey with mulling storms brewing over the ocean in the horizon. At the steel mill located close to the harbor, father and son Thomas and Mace Anderson were heating up pieces of steel to a scorching 1370 degrees Celsius ( 2500 degrees Fahrenheit ) to malleable proportions so they could be bent in the arcing shape of a birthing ship’s side. Both men were sweaty, grime laden and huffing from lack of sufficient oxygen and exhaustion. The father, Thomas, was lost in his work, grunting when he lifted the heavy hammer overhead, only to slam it down with a synchronized exhale of breath. Brief thoughts flitted into the old man’s head: What is Karen making for dinner tonight? Storm’s coming, hope she’d get the laundry dry and inside before the rain hit. Occasionally, he’d glance across the room, lit only by the fire in the massive furnace, at his son’s silhouette repeating the same process he was. Mace’s mind was a complete contradictory to his father’s. Grudgingly he grabbed the long pliers with gloved hands, pulling the glowing-orange piece of steel from the flames to lay it on his anvil. Taking a moment to wipe puddles of sweat off his brow, he scowled at the burning metal. He was made for better than this. He was not meant to be cooped up in the steel mill day in and day out. In his spare time, he often read books about famous explorers before him: Christopher Columbus, Matthew Flinders, Charles Sturt and William Lawson to name a few. He envied them from the bottom of his heart, wanting to take wind to the open sea and see where it brought him. He wanted to step onto uncharted land and claim it as his own, discover ancient cities and possibly even ancient people, and even better… hidden gold! The thoughts were what kept him going but it was a double edged sword, for every time he thought of his wishes, hopes and dreams, it ate away at his soul when he came back to reality with the echoing clang of metal on hot metal.
Both father and son’s thoughts were interrupted when what sounded like thunder erupted from outside the thick walls of the mill. Their eyes met on a bewildered moment, and then shouts that followed the enormous clap were bellowing from the outside – frantic shouts that demanded immediate attention.
Both men dropped what they were doing and rushed to the outside world. The winds had picked up since they had last been outside of the mill, and when they turned to see what all the commotion was about, their eyes went wide with shock.
Upon the tormenting seas in the far horizon, the smoky silhouette of a large ship was being tossed about by the waves. Pelting rain stung the men’s eyes and Thomas had to look away to shield himself and help the other men board down the mill before the cyclone storm hit land. Mace couldn’t tear his eyes away. He blinked past the missile-like rain and gaped as the ship was pummeled by a large wave, reaching high up over the ship’s massive stern. The cloudy horizon seemed to suddenly sink in around the ship, swallowing it in its midst, and that was the last anyone saw of the SS Yongala. The storm raged off land, simmering snarls of mother nature curdling through the air and reverberating in thunderclaps.
The sea had demanded respect from the men, and he feared it, but with a sense of awe inspiring yearn. His father had long ago taught Mace to be level headed and collected on the open waters with small boats and even cargo ships. He knew he could sail, and he knew that it was time.
Encouraged by thoughts of grandeur and the “knowledge” of the treasures he would find, Mace Anderson slipped off into the night unbeknownst to his parents. Freeing a tethered ship from the harbor, and fueled by the ever calm sky after the horrid storm, Mace set out with enough supplies and food to last him until his next pit stop, where he would gather more supplies and food if needed.
Unfortunately for Mace, his favorite compass was not in working order, and instead of sailing northeast, the young explorer found his ship sailing northwest, in between New Zealand and Australia. Thankfully, land was not far off when his ship hit shallow waters and the hulking rocks underneath scraped the bottom of the ship so horribly that a leak sprung, and Mace had to gather as many supplies as he could muster, and clamber onto the shores. Still determined to find land unknown to man, though without a ship, Mace set forth onto the soil with excitement in his heart and dreams too big for a boy in a man’s shoes to fill.
