personality: Silent Jill's personality revolves mostly around the fact that she cannot speak. She is withdrawn and dislikes communicating her thoughts to others. When she does it is often in short sentences or phrases scribbled irritably upon her notebook. However, when she does talk to people she likes, she tends to open up to them and gets close to people easily once they penetrate her outer barrier. Although she is close to a number of people, she tends of avoid sexual relationships, which leads many to believe she is asexual.
She has an instinctual dislike of canines.

history:
Jill was born in 1880 in Scotland, three years after her brother Jacob. Her father was a middle-class businessman; they had a decent amount of money but could hardly be classified as "well-off".
The streets of her hometown could be a dangerous place for children, but Jill found protection among her brother's friends, a small, close knit gaggle of children, mostly boys older than her. Together they roamed the city in the afternoons after school, scuffling, playing, and generally making delinquents of themselves. One of their favorite pastimes, however, was to harass the mangy street dogs and cats by throwing small pebbles and sticks at them. Usually the abused animal would run away but on one occasion, a large doberman rushed to attack them instead. Jill suffered a painful bite and thus developed a resentment of dogs that would follow her into adulthood.
One unfortunate day, in a sudden economic crash, her father's business went totally bankrupt and they were forced to migrate from Scotland down to the slums of London. In their late teens and early twenties, Jill and her brother sought jobs to help support the family. Jacob found some money in becoming a sailor; while Jill took up the less glamorous job of a factory worker, a tedious, ill-paid profession.
It was some years later, after she had left home, that she found the suffragette movement, or rather, it found her. Fed up, she and some of the other factory woman began a protest for higher wages. It failed and the women involved were fired from the factory. Bitter and now jobless after being cast out, Jill didn't want to return home to face her family, and instead allowed herself to be drawn into the suffragette movement. It was, she found, much like her brother's gang, except instead of throwing rocks at animals, they were now committing arson, property destruction, rioting, assault...all in an attempt to get the attention of country.
Well, they paid attention all right. And it began with arrests.
Among other suffragettes, Jennifer was imprisoned. Whilst there, they participated in a hunger strike, which inevitably resulted in force-feeding, a cruel and barbaric practice. From this horrid process, Jennifer suffered a severe throat injury and as a result was released from prison and transferred to the Epsom Cottage Hospital, where it was discovered that her vocal cords were damaged beyond repair. She could no longer speak.
Thus labeled as an invalid and therefore no longer a menace to society, Jennifer was excused from the rest of her prison sentence. However, with her history (as she had been photographed several times during suffragette rallies and shown in the newspapers) it would now be impossible to get a job; and Jill had decided already that she was getting too old for arson.
Her parents deemed her and embarrassment and wanted nothing more to do with her, and going to her brother wasn't an option since he was a sailor and rarely stayed in the same place for very long.
Jill sought help from her richer uncle back in Scotland. He reffered to her as "Silent Jill", and since she could do little to protest, the nickname stuck.
However, he was only slightly more willing to put up with Jennifer and her bad press than her parents, and when he discovered the expedition to the new world, he paid for her passage on the ship, in hopes that she would settle there and therefore no longer be a danger to his reputation.
She has more or less adjusted to life in Eiru, and receives letters from her brother on occasion.
